Vitamin C works by neutralizing the effects of free radicals in the skin. As we age or expose our selves to the sun, our skin cells react by producing ROS( reactive oxygen species) also called as free radicals which can  cause enough damage to the skin, Vitamin C acts by neutralizing the effects of free radicals, so it works as an antioxidant for the skin which helps by not letting these species to further damage the skin and keeps it healthy and glowy.

As discussed above when skin is exposed to UV rays, reactive oxygen species are generated in the skin which leads to generation of free radicals in the skin which can cause oxidative stress in the skin. It can lead to a chain of cascading reaction causing the skin damage which eventually leads to hyperpigmentation and aging in the skin. when vitamin c is introduced to the UV light exposed skin it neutralizes the free radicals and works by keeping a barrier for both g UVA and UVB rays. It is notable that UVA rays cause mutates and destroys collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans which leads to aging in the skin while UVB causes sunburn, ROS, epidermal mutations and skin cancer. While skin can be protected by using sunscreen but Application of added layer of vitamin C underneath it can work as protective barrier by nullifying the effect of free radicals. Vitamin C can be used before exposing the skin to sunlight and also afterwards. One must wear a sunscreen on top of it for maximum benefits.

Vitamin C helps in Collagen synthesis

Vitamin C is essential in biosynthesis of collagen. it helps in stabilizing the molecules that are responsible for maintaining collagen in skin. Topical application as well as consuming vitamin C has both shown beneficial results for sustaining collagen production and collagen itself. it is a very potent anti aging ingredient.

Helps in pigmentation

Vitamin C has been proven to interrupt production of melanocytes in the skin; cells that are responsible for darkening or scarring the skin. It’s use in hyperpigmentation, melasma  and Scars is very  beneficial but it must be combined with other compounds or ingredients to make it more stable for the skin use as well as to extract most out of it like liquorice or vitamin E. Vitamin C is also highly acidic, when applied to the skin it removes the dead layer of the skin and triggers skin to heal by itself.

Well!!! This was all we needed to know about the benefits of vitamin C. What is stopping you from receiving the immense treasure of skin care by just one ingredient.
